The table sorts three ways, and each one orders on a number you can see in the row. Best claims record ranks by claims paid rate — the share of claim value an insurer actually paid out rather than leaving outstanding, calculated from the Nepal Insurance Authority's FY 2081/82 figures; we treat 97% and above as the top tier. Lowest premium ranks by the estimated premium for the age, cover, and term you set. Highest bonus ranks by the insurer's own published bonus range per NPR 1,000 of sum assured, with insurers that publish no rate listed last. A cheap policy from an insurer with a poor claims record can leave your family without a payout when it matters most. The claim settlement record — which we calculate from the Nepal Insurance Authority's published figures for claim amounts paid versus amounts still outstanding — shows how reliably an insurer turns claims into payouts. A consistently high figure points to a clean payout pipeline; a lower one means a bigger share of claim value is stuck unpaid. Never choose on price alone.

Endowment and whole-life policies accumulate a reversionary bonus each year, declared per NPR 1,000 of sum assured. For example, a bonus of NPR 60 per thousand on a NPR 25 lakh policy adds NPR 15,000 to your maturity payout every year. A higher bonus rate means more money returned at the end of the term. It is a useful comparison point for savings-focused plans, but it should never override claims reliability.

Term insurance provides pure death cover for a fixed period — the cheapest option for maximum protection with no maturity payout. Endowment plans combine life cover with a savings element, returning premiums plus accumulated bonus at maturity. Whole-life cover extends for your entire lifetime rather than a fixed term. ULIPs (Unit Linked Insurance Plans) link returns to market-traded units, so the value rises and falls with the market — but as of our 2026 review of all 14 catalogues, no Nepali insurer sells one; they are common in India, not Nepal. Money-back plans pay out a portion of the sum assured at regular intervals during the term rather than only at maturity.

All 14 NIA-licensed life insurers — including those with foreign joint-venture partners — operate under identical regulatory requirements set by the Nepal Insurance Act and supervised by the Nepal Insurance Authority. Solvency requirements, reserve rules, and claim payment obligations apply equally regardless of ownership structure. Use the claims settlement ratio and financial strength data in this comparison tool rather than ownership to judge reliability.
